Forty thousand deaths occur every year from car accidents. That’s 40,000! It is one of the leading causes of death and injury in the entire United States. What’s more tragic is that many of those deaths could have been prevented if seat belts were worn.
The seat belt is truly an engineered masterpiece for saving lives. Its foremost and basic function is to lock up at sudden stops, securely keeping you in your seat, preventing serious injury. However, that is not the only intention of the seat belt.
Seat Belt Functionality
What many do not know is that each seat belt manufactured for the U.S. after 1996 is equipped with a gas charge that has 1 life of its own – and that’s to save yours. When a serious accident occurs, the airbags equipped with the vehicle go off rapidly, and magically the seat belts blow out simultaneously. Why? Well, the airbag is a very powerful bag blowing up at an insane speed at the place where your face is… You do not know to want to hit it. So a rapid gas-charge goes off inside the retractor, pulling the seat belt back (tightening it) and you with it against the back of the seat. This ensures that you do not hit the airbag.
