Seat Belt Retractor Repair

Seat belt retractor repair is the most popular service offered by Safety Restore. Seat belt retractor repair is usually needed when the seat belt is no longer working or the seat belt retractor is stuck. The seat belt retractor is the actual seat belt assembly, or the male reel unto which the seat belt webbing retracts to. The seat belt retractor is the male part where the latch is and it is usually bolted down to the frame of the car and is covered by trim. If you have tried to access the seat belt retractor, you may have noticed that it has a wire going to it. This is not to indicate the seat belt warning light or activate that annoying sound chime to constantly remind you to wear your seat belt. In fact, this is an airbag connector wire going from the SRS airbag computer. Did you know that your seat belt retractor has an explosive device in it? Known as the seat belt gas charge, the wire is connected to the seat belt inflator sensor that is activated during a crash or collision (when a vehicle gets into an accident) and the gas charge deploys the explosive device. This is in place for the ultra-fast response time that only an explosion can achieve. The job is to lock the seat belt mechanism and tighten any remainder slack to keep the occupant wearing the seat belt in his or her seat. Regardless of what happens to the car, whether its turning over or flying off a bridge, you will be locked in your seat and the airbags will serve as cushions to protect you all around. That is why is crucial to have your seat bel retractor working at all times! A seat belt retractor may already be deployed if your car has been previously involved in a crash or an accident. Seat belt retractors that have been deployed will not work again. This is very common among salvage vehicles that are purchased from salvage auctions to rebuild and resell. Those in this industry will be very familiar with this and know that this is a strict requirement to pass the safety inspections. If you need your seat belt retractor repaired, we can certainly help! Here is a list of symptoms indicating a faulty seat belt retractor:

  • Seat belt retractor is locked
  • Seat belt retractor is stuck
  • Seat belt retractor is jammed
  • Seat belt retractor is not retracting
  • Seat belt retractor is retracting slowly
  • Seat belt retractor is making rattling noise
  • Seat belt retractor is stiff
  • Airbag light is on

Airbag Light Reset

Your airbag light may be on and the codes pointing to a faulty seat belt. If your airbag light is on, you will need to connect to your vehicle with an OBD airbag scan tool to pull or read the codes. If you do not have a scan tool, we recommend buying one for under $100. That is equivalent to one diagnostics charge at your dealership. We recommend the following OBS airbag scan tool: AUTEL AL619 AutoLink Scan Tool This tool also resets soft airbag codes!

If you have read the codes and see anything related to the airbags or the crash, you will also need to perform a hard reset on the SRS unit. We reset SRS airbag module erasing all crash data and hard codes. You will need to remove your SRS unit for this service and mail it in to us for reset.
